Located in Manahawkin, the Southern Regional School District draws from the constituent districts of Long Beach Township, Beach Haven, Surf City, Ship Bottom, Barnegat Light, Harvey Cedars and Stafford Township, as well as the tuition sending district of Ocean Township (Waretown). Both the district and the communities in which the Southern Regional School District serves are diverse as well as unique. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Barnegat Bay, and the Pine Barrens of Southern New Jersey, the area is rich in tradition and in culture.
Southern Regional is a large High School; the House concept allows a small-school atmosphere to prevail in which age specific learning cultures have been established. As of January, 2013, 2,049 students were educated in a campus-like atmosphere consisting of a 9-10 House and an 11-12 House. Each house possesses duplicate core facilities while sharing some specific use facilities. In this manner, Southern Regional High School is able to pursue its goals and provide for a vast student population within the most appropriate cost-effective and technologically advanced learning environment possible.
Driven by an extremely qualified and highly competent faculty, more than half of whom possess advanced degrees, Southern Regional is determined to maintain its leadership force in the county as well as in the state. In order to fulfill this goal, Southern Regional regularly offers a wide range of courses yearly from which students can select. The curriculum, rich in both academic and career preparation, is headlined by 30 weighted courses, of which 12 are advanced placement, including English and English Literature, Spanish, U.S. History, U.S. Government and Politics, Calculus, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Music Theory, Studio Art and Psychology. As a result of the outstanding AP instruction, Southern Regional has been extremely successful in its qualification rate for the Distinguished Scholars Program. Southern Regional has continued its partnership with Ocean County College permitting our students to participate in the Jump Start program. This collaboration between Southern and Ocean County College allows juniors and seniors to receive college credit while still taking their designated high school courses. Southern Regional has also recently developed a partnership with Stockton College to provide students dual credit opportunities in both mathematics and world languages.
The co-curricular and interscholastic programs combine to offer over 75 activities from which to choose. From surfing to chess, the key club to student council, from field hockey to track, Southern believes in participation, preparation, competition and ultimately sportsmanship. All of these activities lead to individual accountability and endeavor. The team concept is utilized as a vehicle toward better school/community citizenship and overall excellence.
Our active Parent Home and School Association exemplifies the Southern commitment to community and parent partnership in the challenge to prepare our students for the future. The community involvement and spirit is demonstrated by the local communitys annual donation of approximately $500,000 in scholarships for our graduates. The staff and community are extremely proud of the many accomplishments of our students. However, what impresses everyone most is the students school spirit and pride which is borne of genuine enthusiasm that reflects a positive vision, a vision predicated on respect for others, concerns for ones surroundings and a commitment to excellence. As a district, Southern Regional believes in the future of young people and strives to create an educational environment in which students are challenged to create, empowered to achieve, encouraged to serve, and expected to succeed. With our commitment to our students, Southern Regional will continue to pursue the most innovative and comprehensive programs in order to facilitate the needs of the population in preparation for the future.
