Academy Charter High School opened in September 1998, as a public, college preparatory high school. The school has a maximum enrollment of 220 students. The non-profit Friends of Academy Charter High School purchased the school building, located in Lake Como, in October 2008.
Academy Charter High School allocates seats in each grade level based upon the resident student population of each of the following towns: Allenhurst, Asbury Park, Avon, Belmar, Bradley Beach, Deal, Interlaken and Lake Como. A lottery is held each year to select students for the incoming freshman class. No other criteria are used. If seats remain available, students from other towns may enroll. Thus, ACHS reflects a diverse community. A waiting list is maintained for each grade level for those waiting for an opportunity to enroll. The School-to-Career office transitions each student to their individual post-graduate plans most often to a two or four year college. Others choose to continue at post-secondary schools, join the military or enter the workforce.
As a graduation requirement, all seniors complete a senior project. In a field of his or her choice, the student completes a minimum of thirty hours of service-learning and then presents their work to the community at a reception. Seniors have the opportunity of taking college classes at Brookdale Community College. ACHS pays for tuition and books. Students also participate in work internships. All students meet weekly with their faculty mentor. During the regularly scheduled 40-minute period, the mentor leads the small group through self-esteem building and life skills activities. On an individual basis, the mentor monitors the student's academic, social and emotional growth. Student surveys indicate the significance of these relationships. ACHS prides itself on its family atmosphere and supportive school culture.
Our school year is 191 days in length. Freshmen have a 203 day school year as they begin their career at ACHS with the Freshmen Seminar in August. All students meet for a half-day session one Saturday a month for cultural enrichment and supplemental activities. Our block schedule follows a four by four structure. Each class meets for eighty to ninety minutes a day for a semester. Course curriculum reflects an interdisciplinary approach. Students are graded on a mastery-based system which encourages students to remediate when necessary to reach a mastery level of proficiency. Mobile laptop carts provide equitable access for all students. Each classroom is equipped with an Eno interactive whiteboard, LCD projector and handheld student response remotes. Student directed learning ensures that students take an active role in their education.
Professional Learning Communities meet weekly. In the PLCs, staff engage in the analysis of individual, cohort and schoolwide data collected from formative assessments and other school records. A data driven decision making culture guides efforts so student achievement gains can be maximized. As a participant in a TIF (Teacher Incentive Fund) grant, ACHS staff members are compensated based on student growth and quality of instruction.
Students represent the ACHS Panthers on various boys and girls athletic teams basketball, track, baseball and track. Students can participate in sports at their resident schools if the sport is not offered at ACHS. A variety of clubs are available so that all students have the opportunity of enriching their high school years.
