Set in a quaint lakeside community that is rich in pride and tradition, Pompton Lakes High School serves both the townships of Pompton Lakes and Riverdale. The close harmony among teachers, parents, students, and administrators provides a comfortable, friendly learning environment that is appreciated by all.
Recognized as one of New Jersey Monthly magazine's Top 100 High Schools and #4 on its list of Most Improved High Schools, Pompton Lakes High School prides itself in providing vast opportunities to meet the needs of its diverse student population. A rigorous and comprehensive academic program is complemented by extensive co-curricular activities, championship interscholastic athletic teams, and an award-winning fine arts program. In addition to providing required courses of study, PLHS offers a myriad of elective courses, including Anatomy and Physiology, Astronomy, Web Design, Journalism, Mythology, Sociology, Current Events, International Business, Personal Law, Three-dimensional Design, Mixed Media, Computer-Aided Design (CAD), High Tech Music, and Introduction to Education. Eleven Advanced Placement (AP) courses, sixteen honors courses, and three world languages round out a solid program of studies.
In addition to presenting a strong curricular program, Pompton Lakes High School affords its students the opportunity to engage in a plethora of club and athletic activities. An impressive 90% of students choose to take advantage of this opportunity. PLHS offers twenty-two extracurricular activities, organizations, and societies, including student government, publications, and service groups. An esteemed member of the recently formed and highly competitive North Jersey Interscholastic Conference (NJIC), PLHS hosts twenty-two male and female varsity sports teams. The storied history of Pompton athletics is depicted by the many state championship banners that adorn the gymnasium, along with an exemplary record of sportsmanship of which the school community is particularly proud. An award-winning music program includes a marching band, concert band, and choir that have previously performed and competed in Disney World; Washington, DC; Hershey, PA; and New York City. A jazz band, spring musical cast and pit orchestra, and other small chamber groups round out this considerable program. Art and photography students have had the distinction of seeing their pieces displayed locally and at collegiate arts exhibitions. Recognized as one of the best in New Jersey, the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) group has regularly competed on a national level, most recently earning a trip to San Antonio, TX.
Pompton Lakes High School students continue to meet rigorous standards and bring acclaim to their alma mater. State assessment results for the 146-member Class of 2012 met all Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) indicators under No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Accountability Requirements; these results rendered PLHS one of only two high schools in Passaic County to have achieved this standard eight years in a row. Members of the Class of 2012 were offered nearly $3.0 million in scholarships to further their education at a vast number of colleges and universities throughout the country, including Ivy League schools. More than 50% of this class earned college credits prior to graduation. One member of the class was honored as a National Merit Commended Scholar.
Pride and tradition reign at PLHS, yet exciting changes abound. The high school has been selected as a New Jersey Choice School by successfully establishing two specialized programs in addition to AP through which students can earn college credits. By participating in Seton Hall University's Project Acceleration, students can earn college credits in seven courses taught at the high school by distinguished faculty members; by participating in PLHS' Challenger Program, students may attend college classes on the Wanaque campus of Passaic County Community College. Having recently implemented curriculum enhancements in mathematics, art, and music, PLHS has planned further exciting changes that include new AP offerings in science, social studies, and art. Other recent changes of note at the high school include the installation of new state-of-the-art science and computer (PC and Mac) laboratories; new heating, cooling, security, and locker systems; a new co-educational weight training facility; and the infusion of SMART, Interwrite Mobi, PASCO SPARK, and Discovery Education streaming technologies throughout the building.
The enthusiasm and positivism that encompass Pompton Lakes High School is not limited to the students and faculty alone. Heightened and sustained involvement in the Parent-Teacher Association and booster clubs demonstrates the dedication of the parents in this community. Families express their pride in the school and its traditions. Attendance at activities and games, both home and away, is remarkable. Furthermore, local businesses, families, and organizations willingly and enthusiastically recognize student achievement in all areas. This verity is most notably represented by the substantial annual contributions made toward the school's scholarship program.
Today, very few local parents enroll their children in non-public institutions; instead they choose to stay within the district. Moreover, some non-resident parents have applied to have their children attend PLHS through the New Jersey Interdistrict Public School Choice Program. Thus, families recognize the great opportunities available at Pompton Lakes High School, the crown jewel of a spirited town.
