Newton High School serves students from Andover Township, Andover Borough, and Green Township as well as historic Newton. The school community contains a wealth of talent, as our students excel academically, athletically, and in the arts. Graduates attending college consistently report how well they were prepared and how their high school experiences were exceptional. Ninety percent of the graduates from the Class of 2012 enrolled in post-secondary collegiate programs with over 5 million dollars in scholarships being awarded to them.
Over the past decade, Newton High School has performed excellently when compared to high schools in the region and peers across the state. The average SAT scores over a ten-year period place Newton among the top three schools in Sussex County. Our diverse curriculum offers students over 25 courses with Advanced Placement or Honors designation in English, Math, Science, Social Studies, World Language, and Art as well as other electives. Our cooperative agreement with Sussex County Community College allows students to attain college credit while enrolled in high school. This past year Newton High School has entered into an agreement with Syracuse University to provide an opportunity to earn college credit in French and Web Design.
Newton High School's unique Agriscience program and FFA chapter are among the most accomplished student organizations in northern New Jersey. They have been recognized nationally, and students continue to achieve top awards in annual competitions. The Technology Students Association has been recognized also for its outstanding accomplishments in state competitions. The literary magazine Calliope has received many high ratings from the National Council of Teachers of English.
The Choral and Instrumental programs attract large numbers of students who participate in a variety of concerts and competitions. The concert choir and Madrigals competed in Baltimore where they were rated as superior in their division and won "Best in Class" for small and large ensembles. The Madrigal Ensemble performed at Carnegie Hall in April. Students in the music department have the opportunity to perform in many extracurricular activities such as Marching Band, Jazz Band, Show Choir and Chamber Choir. Students in these groups have been members of the NJMEA county, regional and state ensembles.
Athletic excellence is evident by the high participation rate among students in both male and female programs. Our students compete in 22 varsity sports in the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference, and we field three levels for the majority of our programs.
We are very proud of our students at Newton High School and invite our parents, community members, and future students to visit us and see the reasons for our success.
