The focus of Henry Snyder High School is the strategic plan of the District - to improve student achievement, decrease the dropout rate and improve attendance. Our mission is to ensure that all students will learn and demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ethics necessary to succeed in a safe and positive learning climate. With the cooperation and assistance from families and the community, Henry Snyder High School students will come to understand the significance of respecting themselves and others and be empowered to thrive in a highly competitive technologically advancing multi-ethnic, diverse global society.The primary goal of Henry Snyder High School is to provide a multiplicity of educational experiences for its students. Snyder offers a traditional comprehensive secondary school program including options to participate in five Magnet Programs. Students have the opportunity to choose Media Arts High Tech, Culinary Arts, Computer Repair, Health Professions or Tech Prep.
A Freshman Small Learning Community has been established to provide all ninth grade students with a successful transition to the academically challenging atmosphere of a large comprehensive high school that is found at Snyder High School. Our challenge is to provide a safe, supportive and disciplined learning environment that accommodates diverse learning styles and through which all students may reach their potential and become responsible citizens.
Our graduation rate continues to rise because of attendance incentives and increased monitoring of pupil attendance. College acceptances to four year programs include: Berkely College, Bloomfield College, Benedict College, Cittone Institute, DeVry, Fairleigh Dickinson, Felician College, Georgian Court, Gibbs College, Johnson Wales, Kean University, Knoxville College, Montclair State College, New Jersey City University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Richard Stockton, Rutgers University, Saint Peter?s College, Virginia Tech A&D, William Patterson University. Acceptances were received from Hudson County Community College.
The College Preparatory Incentive Program (CPIP) prepares students for college. CPIP is part of the federal trip program that consists of UPWARD BOUND, Student Support Services and Student Talent Search. Gear-Up and Upward Bound are academic enrichment programs that provide instruction in Math, Science, English, and Computer Science, individual and group counseling sessions, and recreational services. Fifteen Together is a nationally recognized National School Boards 2002 MAGNA Award winning program, which integrates mentoring of at-risk students with parental and community support.
The Snyder High School Improvement Project, initially a grant in collaboration with New Jersey City University, continues to provide training programs that are based on Best Practice models recognized by the New Jersey Department of Education and Best Practices from the Council for Exceptional Children. Programs are developed to meet the specific identified needs of the students, teachers and community. In partnership with New Jersey City University, The Century Program (TCP), a grant supported program sponsored by the Foundation for Excellent Schools (FES), continues. The goal of the program is to empower students to apply to, be accepted into, and to succeed in a post-secondary institution by implementing the core practices of TCP mentoring, goal setting, pathways to college and leadership through service. New Jersey City University has selected Snyder High School to participate in the National Professional Development School organization. New Jersey City University provides Snyder High School teachers with professional development opportunities and we in turn provide their pre-service teachers with opportunities for training and classroom observations.
Snyder High School offers its students a wide array of after school activities as part of the extended day program. Activities include, but are not limited to, Audio Club, Chess Club, CPR/First Aid, Drama, FCCLA Chef Club, Gospel Club, Multicultural Club, FBLA, Sewing Club, Writing Club, Woodworking, and various dance and academic clubs. Eligible students may participate in team sports including football, basketball, baseball, softball, track, cheerleading, volleyball, bowling and soccer.
