LIBERTY HIGH SCHOOL
Liberty High School has provided more than a decade of academic nurturing. Teachers, students, and staff alike are treated as individuals and are offered a smaller setting than the larger comprehensive public high schools in Jersey City. Liberty High School currently implements the in-class support model for students with special needs. The most notably unique feature of the school is its size and parental involvement. With an average population of 185 students, a personalized learning environment and a family-like atmosphere is easily created. Once a student is accepted, both parents/guardians and students sign a responsibilities contract. This symbolic gesture seals the parent partnership with the Liberty High School community and insures their childs academic success. Liberty High School was recently awarded a Bronze medal in the U.S. News and World Reports annual list of Americas Best High Schools.Liberty High School is located west of Journal Square allowing easy access by public transportation. The school attracts students from across the city, thus creating a culturally diverse student body. Various educational opportunities are offered to students such as honor classes and Advanced Placement United States History 1. Students enrolled in Theater Arts classes at Liberty High School are provided with an opportunity to work with an Artist-in-Residence from NJ PAC. The computer laboratory for Business Studies provides students with a means to develop and strengthen their technological proficiencies. Our Biology Lab offers virtual dissections and our Physics Laboratory provides students with a kinesthetic approach to science. Physical education classes are student friendly and encourage movement whether at the ping pong table or increasing endurance using the popular Dance, Dance Revolution. Several of our students have been accepted into the Jersey City Arts High School Program. Students must audition or go through a portfolio assessment to be accepted into this program. Students take courses in visual arts, drama, or vocal/instrumental music held at the Jersey City Arts High School, on the campus of New Jersey City University, for one period a day. Qualified seniors enjoy a wealth of opportunities including a business work/study program and the Police and Fire Science Program. Students enrolled in the Police and Fire Science Program are provided with the opportunity to learn about the police/fire professions in particular and the criminal justice system in general. This program offers 10 elective credits toward the high school diploma as well as an opportunity to earn 6 college credits. In order to ease the transition into Liberty High School the first floor is configured into the Freshman Academy and all 9th grade students must participate in a mandatory district JUMPSTART program.
Student achievement is paramount and students are given every opportunity to succeed. Liberty High School has instituted a morning, lunch, and after school homework club. Tutoring is offered through the National Honor Society. A district Extended Day Program for academic support is also available. Project Graduation and TRAC (Transitional Roads to Attending College) Program lend additional support to at-risk students.
A small variety of clubs allows students to channel their interests as well as practice teamwork and socialization in a teacher directed activity. Students interested in interscholastic sports teams may participate in their local neighborhood high school.
Our students have been recognized for their achievement in various contests and programs sponsored by a multitude of organizations. For example, a student was recently selected as a NJ Rising Scholar and another enjoyed a European Tour to study the Holocaust. Liberty High Schools aim is to provide a quality program within the constraints of our small school environment.
