Situated in Manahawkin, the Southern Regional School District draws from the constituent districts of Long Beach Township, Beach Haven, Surf City, Ship Bottom, Barnegat Light, Harvey Cedars and Stafford Township, as well as the tuition sending district of Ocean Township (Waretown). Both the district and the communities in which the Southern Regional School District serves are diverse as well as unique. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Barnegat Bay, and the Pine Barrens of Southern New Jersey, the area is rich in tradition and in culture.
Southern Regional is a large High School; the House concept allows a small-school atmosphere to prevail in which age specific learning cultures have been established. As of January 13, 2012, 2,085 students are educated in a campus-like atmosphere consisting of a 9-10 House and an 11-12 House. Each house possesses duplicate core facilities while sharing some specific use facilities. In this manner, Southern Regional High School is able to pursue its goals and provide for a vast student population within the most appropriate cost-effective and technologically advanced learning environment possible.
The Southern Regional School District is guided by a Strategic Plan which has long been recognized as an incredibly comprehensive and innovative plan. The concept of this plan facilitates a school system that prides itself on providing a multitude of programs and progressive initiatives that are supported by the boundless energy of the students and staff. Driven by an extremely qualified and highly competent faculty, more than half of whom possess advanced degrees, Southern Regional is determined to maintain its leadership force in the county as well as in the state. In order to fulfill this goal, Southern Regional regularly offers a wide range of courses yearly from which students can select. The curriculum, rich in both academic and career preparation, is headlined by 26 weighted courses, of which 15 are advanced placement, including English and English Literature, World Languages, U.S. History, Calculus Lab I and II, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Studio Art, Music Theory, and Psychology. As a result of the outstanding AP instruction, Southern Regional has been extremely successful in its qualification rate for the Distinguished Scholars Program. Southern Regional has continued its partnership with Ocean County College permitting our students to participate in a Jump Start program. This collaboration between Southern and Ocean County College allows juniors and seniors to receive college credit while still taking their designated high school courses.
The co-curricular and interscholastic programs combine to offer over 75 activities from which to choose. From surfing to chess, the computer club to student council, from field hockey to track, Southern believes in participation, preparation, competition and ultimately sportsmanship. All of these activities lead to individual accountability and endeavor. The team concept is utilized as a vehicle toward better school/community citizenship and overall excellence.
This is also shown through our active Parent Home and School Association which illustrates the Southern commitment to community and parent partnership in the challenge to prepare our students for the future. The community involvement and spirit is also demonstrated by the more than $500,000 in scholarships raised annually by local donors, groups, and organizations for our graduates. The staff and community remain extremely proud of the many accomplishments of our students. However, what impresses everyone most is the students school spirit and pride which is borne of genuine enthusiasm, which reflects a positive vision, a vision which is predicated on respect for others, concerns for ones surroundings and a commitment to excellence. As a district, Southern Regional believes in the future of young people and strives to create an educational environment in which students are challenged to create, empowered to achieve, encouraged to serve, and expected to succeed. With our commitment to our students, Southern Regional will continue to pursue the most innovative and comprehensive programs in order to facilitate the needs of the population in preparation for the future.
