Somerville High School is a learning community that endorses the concept of facilitating a student-centered learning environment with an emphasis on preparing students for success in a 21st Century global society. As stated in our mission statement, our goal is to ensure that students are provided with an exceptional 21st Century education that promotes innovation, collaboration, and the transfer of concepts to real-world applications. We proudly serve a population of approximately 1250 students from the communities of Somerville and Branchburg. Our school community is composed of a diverse population of students. This school culture is centered on promoting a sustained standard of excellence in the areas of learning and instruction in an environment that recognizes the varied needs, talents, and abilities of our students.
Our staff embraces the challenge of providing students with 21st century skill sets that include critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity. We are committed to the practice of facilitating a learning community that addresses these new challenges while providing sound instruction for students with diverse needs and varying future endeavors. Somerville High students are provided a curriculum that includes 13 Advanced Placement (AP) courses, Project Lead The Way (PLTW) a computer based pre-engineering program, and a wide variety of electives that allow students to pursue specific interests that will enhance their scholastic experience. Our students have the choice of 23 varsity sports and over 30 clubs to participate in within the school community where they are consistently delivered the message of how student involvement in such activities has a direct correlation to their overall success.
Somerville High has established a reputation as one of the finest schools in central New Jersey in addition to being recognized as one of the top schools in the state. We have been recognized by New Jersey Monthly and MONEY magazines as one of the top state and national high schools respectively. Additionally, Newsweek named Somerville High School as one of the nation’s top 1,500 high schools in June 2010. As a staff, it is our goal to further promote a standard of excellence in the areas of instructional practices and student achievement by facilitating a learning environment that reinforces the comprehension and transfer of concepts that are relevant to global trends and events while preparing our students with skill sets that will prepare them for success in the 21st century market place.
